How Much is a Billion? - Kids in Need Foundation

#howmuch is a billion?

The Kids In Need Foundation reached a milestone in our foundation’s 23 year history: one billion dollars in school supplies donated and distributed to kids across the country.

Since 1995, our mission has been to step in where the need is greatest. By 1999 we had five resource centers in our national network and we’ve grown to 40 and counting. In 2004 we expanded our model with our School Ready Supplies program, in 2013 we formalized our response to natural disasters with the Second Responder program, and in 2017 we launched Teacher Supply Boxes.

But our story goes beyond the numbers. It’s about what it can actually mean to a kid to have a pencil or a notebook. For the one in five American families struggling financially, school supplies simply cannot be a priority. Yet they can make all the difference in the world to a student’s success. How can kids succeed in the classroom without these basic tools to learn?

So we’re starting the conversation about just #howmuch a billion actually is. We invite you to join in and share #howmuch school supplies have meant to you as a student or parent. Share #howmuch of your own money you have spent on your classroom as a teacher. Consider #howmuch more need still exists for our children. Challenge yourself on #howmuch you can give to help reach the next billion.

Are you part of the billion?

We make it easy to contribute! If you’re interested in gift-in-kind contributions to help us go the final mile in our one billion dollar goal, contact Jen Lehman at jenl@kinf.org.

The Kids In Need Foundation is committed to seeing that every student has the required school supplies to be successful in the classroom. We won’t stop until we reach that goal!

When families struggle financially, school supplies just can't be a priority. In 2017, we directly supported 6.2 million kids with new supplies.
