Through the Kids In Need national network of affiliates, thousands of classrooms across the U.S. will receive essential tools for learning

DAYTON, OHIO (OCTOBER 14, 2015) – The Kids In Need Foundation, a national nonprofit organization dedicated to providing free school supplies to economically disadvantaged school children and under-funded teachers, announced today a gift of nearly 6 million pencils from Dixon Ticonderoga Company and Lowe’s. Together, both organizations are meeting a basic classroom need to ensure students have the tools to succeed in school.

On October 14, 11 Kids In Need Foundation Resource Centers across the country will help celebrate this generous gift by hosting local Lowe’s representatives and media partners to highlight the great need in these communities and their commitment to helping fill that need. Studies show that when kids have the tools they need to learn, classroom behavior and attitudes toward school and learning improve, and kids have a stronger sense of self-esteem.

All 34 Kids In Need Foundation Resource Center affiliates and two junior affiliates will be the recipients of the pencil donation across the country. The donation of 6 million pencils would cover 700 miles worth of pencils in length if placed tip to end. That is enough pencils to cross the Grand Canyon 70 times.

In addition to this generous pencil donation, the Dixon Ticonderoga Company is the national pencil sponsor for all Kids In Need Foundation Resource Centers nationwide, providing pencils year-round.

“The Dixon Ticonderoga Company cares deeply about the Kids In Need Foundation’s mission to ensure that every child is prepared to learn,” said Tim Gomez, CEO, Dixon Ticonderoga Company. “We know that when kids have the tools they need, they will have a better classroom experience and their potential for success increases.”

“More than sixteen million kids in this country live below the poverty level, and many of these students go to school without the tools they need to learn,” said Dave Smith, executive director of the Kids In Need Foundation. “Confidence is a big factor in the classroom. Dixon Ticonderoga Company and Lowe’s understands that every student deserves to put his or her best foot forward in the classroom, and supplies help them do that.”

“At Lowe’s, we know that education influences the future of our communities,” said Joan Higginbotham, Lowe’s Director of Community Relations. “We are proud to provide resources to public schools through our Toolbox for Education grants program and support initiatives like this pencil donation with Dixon Ticonderoga.”
