Remember the headlines about the Chicago teacher, Kimberly Bermudez, who shared her love for teaching, but also the struggle she faced trying to make sure her students had school supplies? Passengers on her flight heard her story and wanted to give back. All of a sudden people she didn’t even know were handing cash over the seats to help her students. “Do something amazing,” they told her.
At Kids In Need Foundation we hear stories like hers every day and we see the real impact poverty has on a student’s ability to engage in learning and have equitable opportunities in the classroom. Ms. Kimber shared how her hard-working her students parents are, how they “are amazing [and] will go without for their child.” And yet it is a struggle for these families to provide even the basic necessities, and too many children come to school hungry or even homeless.
We knew it was our mission to help, and our national product sponsors rallied to give her and her school the surprise of a lifetime – we’re providing her entire school with new supplies for the students, the teachers, and even books to start their library! Good Morning America’s T. J. Holmes made a magical moment they will never forget, as volunteers handed students brand new backpacks and unloaded trucks filled with three tons of paper, 133,000 crayons, 33,000 yards of tape, 6,000 glue sticks, 5,000 books, and more!

With 15 million students living in poverty in our country, and some 21 million relying on federal nutrition programs, we can’t afford to stop now. We invite you to join us in making more of these moments happen for students in need across our country. To help your dollars go further, our incredible partner, JOANN, will be matching dollars donated to Kids In Need Foundation today, up to the first $50,000.
Along with JOANN’s, we are lucky to have other partners donating and giving product to the school. A special thanks goes out to Thirty-One Gifts, Georgia-Pacific Communication Papers, BIC Consumer Products, USA, and Scholastic Book Fairs. Without your generous support, we would not be able to help as many students.
Now join us in giving back, so all students have the tools they need to succeed in the classroom.
