As a nonprofit serving underprivileged students across the country with school supplies, we’ve made a lot of friends who care about the same thing. We’re all committed to seeing that every student comes into the classroom with the tools they need to learn and succeed in school and in life. For the more than 16 million families that struggle with extreme poverty, access to basic school supplies – pencils and pens, crayons and paper – is critical to helping put their educational careers on the right trajectory.
Recently we’ve been working with two companies independently on projects for this back-to-school season. Both Georgia-Pacific and Newell Brands are key partners of the Kids In Need Foundation and both corporations have strong histories of giving back locally. They understand that we all have a responsibility to see that educational success isn’t a factor of economical status.
For the past two years, Newell Brands and Kids In Need distributed “Teacher Toolboxes” during Teacher Appreciation Week to thank teachers for the important role they play in educating the minds of tomorrow. These containers are filled with vital school supplies from the company’s well-known Sharpie®, Paper Mate®, Expo®, and other brands to provide teachers access to the tools they need help students learn.
Throughout this month, we will give more than 6,200 toolboxes to teachers that work in challenged communities in Atlanta and the surrounding area. To those teachers and students, these supplies from Newell Brands are a huge gift. We know from our relationship with teachers that on average they spend $500 annually of their own money on their students, and these Teacher Toolboxes are meant to help bridge that gap.
This year we saw an opportunity to do a little cross-pollination while building and distributing these toolboxes. From our National Network of Affiliates, we know that paper is one of the most requested items from teachers and that including paper in this year’s Teacher Toolboxes would be a huge help. We reached out to another one of our partners in Atlanta, Georgia-Pacific, and they were extremely excited to participate. They happily donated enough paper for every Teacher Toolbox.
Newell Brands is one of our Platinum Partners and Georgia-Pacific is our National Paper Sponsor. Both companies make huge contributions to our efforts with resources and products to see no one is left behind in the classroom. We thank both companies for their commitments and openness to partnering with other brands to help give back to those most in need.
