There are some tools in a classroom that feel small—but carry extraordinary impact. A pencil is one of them. It’s the first instrument of self-expression. The bridge between imagination and paper. The quiet companion to every math problem solved, every spelling word written out, and every story that’s been drafted and revised. It’s such a simple object—lightweight, inexpensive, easy to overlook. And yet, pencils remain the #1 most requested school supply by teachers across the country.

In many classrooms, they don’t last long. They are shared, misplaced, sharpened down to the eraser. By midyear, supplies that have already been stretched thin are now running low. And when pencils disappear, teachers often step in, purchasing more out of pocket, because without them, students lose opportunities to write, solve, practice, and share their voice with the world.

A pencil may seem ordinary. But in a child’s hand, it becomes possibility. Something so simple should never be a barrier to learning. And with help from Dixon Ticonderoga, we are working to remove those barriers across the country with our 5th annual #PostForPencils campaign. In the weeks ahead, we’ll invite you to join us—because putting pencils into students’ hands is something we can do together.

This March, Kids In Need Foundation is proud to once again partner with Dixon Ticonderoga to meet that need in a powerful—but beautifully simple—way. From March 16th-30th, leading up to National Pencil Day on March 30th, every individual post, repost, or share using the #PostForPencils will result in Dixon Ticonderoga donating a pack of pencils to students through Kids In Need Foundation–up to 2 million pencils nationwide, creating a direct correlation from social post to putting a pencil in a child’s hand.

Pencils power learning in deeply meaningful ways. Writing by hand activates multiple areas of the brain. It strengthens retention. It promotes deeper thinking and idea generation. It reduces distractions that often come with screens. And perhaps most importantly, pencils give students free reign to try with the knowledge that mistakes can be erased, and ideas can be reshaped, building their confidence with every stroke.

For educators like LaNesha Tabb, writing is more than an academic skill—it’s transformative:

“I think about the role reading has played in my life. I’ve been changed by poetry, books, and articles. When we spend a lot of time reading, we may not always think about the writer behind it- all of the skills and crafting that went into it. It’s critical work and writers matter. I believe that writing changes the world every day. As a teacher, it’s my desire to plant the seed of writing within as many young children as I can.”

Planting that seed requires the right tools. Through this partnership, pencil packs will be distributed directly to the students and classrooms served by Kids In Need Foundation—delivered classroom-ready and ready for immediate use. Teachers can focus on instruction instead of supply shortages and students can participate fully, confidently, and creatively. Because when we remove even the smallest barriers, learning becomes accessible—and voices grow stronger.

Educational equity starts with access. It starts with ensuring that no child is without supplies as basic and essential as a pencil. We are deeply grateful to Dixon Ticonderoga for investing in students and teachers nationwide and for recognizing that essential tools unlock extraordinary potential.

Join us in amplifying this impact. Between March 16th-30th, post, repost, or share using the #PostForPencils and help put pencils directly into the hands of students who need them most. And if you feel moved to create a deeper impact, consider extending your support with a donation to Kids In Need Foundation to continue fueling classrooms with the tools that power learning all year long.

Because when classrooms are fully equipped, students don’t just complete assignments. They discover their voice.

Kids In Need Foundation helps create equitable learning spaces through the distribution of supplies and resources, investing in teachers and students in underserved schools. With the belief that every child in America should have equal opportunity and resources to engage in a quality education, Kids In Need Foundation focuses its programs and initiatives on teachers and students most under-resourced, those where 70 percent or more of the enrolled students are eligible for free or reduced-cost meals through the National School Lunch Program. In 2023, through its programs, National Network of Resource Centers, and coast-to-coast local partners, Kids In Need Foundation and our national network supported over 4 million students and 200,00 teachers in 13,000 under-resourced schools, with KINF distributing more than $42 million in free school supplies and classroom resources nationwide at no cost to schools or teachers.
