Why Back-to-School Readiness Matters | July Newsletter

For many of us, the first day of school is remembered through small moments.

Walking into a new classroom. Finding a seat. Opening a brand-new notebook. Meeting a teacher who made us feel seen.

Those moments stay with us because they shape something much bigger than a school year. They shape confidence, belonging and the belief that I have what I need to be here.

But for far too many students, the first day begins with uncertainty. Wondering whether they’ll have the supplies to complete an assignment. Whether they’ll have to ask to borrow a pencil. Whether they’ll feel like they belong before they even have the chance to raise their hand.

That’s why back-to-school readiness matters.

Together with our partners, volunteers, and supporters, KINF is on track to equip more than 2 million students, 90,500 teachers, and 6,700 schools across 46 states with the essential resources that help students fully participate from day one. Because when students feel prepared, they’re free to focus on what really matters—learning, growing, and discovering what’s possible.

Our latest Back-to-School Readiness Report explores why school supplies are about so much more than backpacks and notebooks. They are often the first step toward confidence, participation, and belonging—and they can transform how a child experiences the entire school year.

And behind those findings are the educators who see the impact of being prepared every day. They know that having the right resources doesn’t just change what students can do in the classroom, it changes how they’re able to show up in it.

Beyond the Backpack: Supporting Teachers Who See What’s Possible

Behind every classroom supply is a teacher who knows exactly what their students are capable of. They see the creativity, curiosity, resilience, and potential that can sometimes be difficult to see from the outside—and they keep showing up because they believe in what’s possible when students are equipped with the right tools.

But too often, that belief comes with a personal cost. Teachers are investing copious amounts of time, energy, and often their own money because they know their students are worth it. But when teachers are spending their own money to make sure students have what they need, they’re forced to make a choice no educator should have to make: supporting their students or supporting themselves.

“I assume that my students don’t have any supplies. That is the standard operating mode. The majority of our kids don’t come to us with all their new school supplies, so that’s part of what we have to prepare for…. If I want my students to have something I know that I need to provide it for them.”

That’s why KINF exists. We want teachers to be able to focus on unlocking students’ potential—not worrying about what happens when the supplies run out. When essential resources are available, educators can spend less time worrying about what their classrooms are missing and more time doing what they do best: unlocking curiosity, building confidence, and helping students grow. Because beyond the backpack, beyond the supplies themselves, is something much bigger—the opportunity for a student to participate fully, use their voice, and find excitement in learning.

And that’s what it’s all about. At the center of it all are the students. “Finding the delight in their growth and in their experience of the world… Finding those moments of joy really keeps me going.” It’s what keeps teachers coming back, what inspires them to keep finding new ways to reach their classrooms, and what makes the investment worth it. Because when we invest in the resources teachers need, we’re not just filling a classroom—we’re helping fuel the belief that keeps educators coming back, day after day, ready to help their students become everything they’re capable of becoming.

Making that kind of support possible at scale takes all of us.

Every national milestone is made possible through partnerships that bring this work to life in local communities. This month, we’re proud to spotlight one of those partnerships and the thousands of classrooms it’s helping prepare for the year ahead.

Partner Spotlight: Burger King Foundation’s Crown A Classroom

Every student deserves to walk into a classroom equipped for learning. Through its Crown A Classroom program, Burger King Foundation is helping make that vision a reality by investing in teachers, classrooms, and the communities they serve.

This year, the program will provide 6,735 Teacher Supply Boxes to educators in 1,754 schools, reaching 143,000 students through the support of 43 Burger King franchise organizations. Each Teacher Supply Box provided through Crown A Classroom contains core supplies to help equip an entire classroom, ensuring educators have the resources to support every learner and create environments where students can participate, engage, and grow. These numbers reflect more than volume—they represent supported educators, well-equipped classrooms, and students ready to learn, helping expand access to quality education as the gateway to opportunity both inside and beyond the classroom.

The impact is perhaps best captured by one teacher whose classroom was supported through the program:

“The supplies we received have had a tremendous impact on our students. As a Title I school, many of our families come from low-income households and often struggle to provide basic school supplies for their children. Having access to these materials has allowed our students to fully participate in classroom activities, complete assignments, and take pride in their learning. It has also lifted a huge burden off teachers and families, ensuring that every child — regardless of their family’s financial situation — has the tools they need to succeed.”

Thank you, Burger King Foundation and Burger King franchise organizations, for helping create classrooms where every student has the opportunity to start the school year prepared, confident, and ready to learn.

At Kids In Need Foundation (KINF), we believe every student deserves equal access to the resources needed for a quality education. We work to foster equitable learning spaces by providing essential supplies to under-resourced students and teachers nationwide, focusing on schools where 70% or more of students qualify for free or reduced-price meals through the National School Lunch Program.
